Building an ancient ruined section of a city for a graphic story.
This story has our heroes heading through a ruined city street out on patrol. The final images had several layers and this is the main section as they head into town.
The set started with the old bridge all made out of wood and detailed with kit parts. I spent time with a chisel bashing up the wood to look decayed and falling apart.
I used a lot of garden mulch and soils etc., to dress the ground and twigs for broken and dead trees. Also a lot of model railroad dressings.
The buildings were mostly made out of building bricks as it is a fast way to build up a structure that can be redone for other shots. Once the structures were done, they were dressed with kit parts and bits of tape to break up the brick lines.
Over time, I built up a collection of buildings and structures and other smaller detail builds such as small tech devices. When I had the shot planned, I would select the models I wanted and moved them into the studio ready to build the set.
I had all the added dressings in containers so all I had to do was lay down the bridge and street then just scatter the dressings around. The build of the set was less than an hour.
The robot characters head across the bridge and into town. They all have to be suspended on wires and the beam running above the bridge is what I hung the wires on.
